What We Do

Spirited By Truth (SBT) was created to encourage and support women in achieving overall wellness and gain insight to accomplish a more balanced purposeful life.  At SBT, an environment conducive to learning, peaceful enough for connection, uplifting for those seeking guidance and support is created for each participant.

Spirited By Truth incorporates an integrated approach focused on mind, body, and spiritual health, as well as connection.  Spirited By Truth utilizes different forms of psychotherapeutic, meditative, and spiritual practices to quiet the mind and unleash the inner strength that lies within you.

I needed help and support during a challenging time in my life. I was able to connect with Spirited By Truth and get exactly what my soul needed.

Spirited By Truth

Founder

Alexandra Samuel-Sturgess, LCSW

I'm Alex! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have nearly two decades of experience empowering women from all walks of life in making healthier life choices. Spirited By Truth, is the continuance of my work in promoting holistic wellness in the lives of women. After working a combined 16 years in probation, social services, substance abuse treatment, and mental health services, the realization is that many women who I would come into contact within these systems, were not being properly treated, nor were their mental and spiritual needs being met. Many women yearned for something more than the traditional modalities and voiced the need of more woman centered care. From this great need for more personalized care for women, Birthed the Creation of Spirited By Truth.

How I Work as a Therapist:

I'm the kind of therapist that wants to get in there with you and inact change! I work with you in taking the action steps necessary to get you to that next step, so if you want to use your time venting, and not READY to take ACTION then I'm NOT the therapist for you.

When I Do My Best Work:

I do my best work with women who are depressed and anxious by helping them find a sense of self worth, acceptance, and belonging. I work diligently to equip women with practical coping skills that will allow them to decrease symptoms which look like this:

Increased Sleep= Less Frustration

Lowered Stress= Increased Productivity

Lowered Anxiety= Increased Ability to Focus and Accomplish Goals

Decreased Depressive Symptoms= More Confidence & Courage to Live A More Purposeful Life.

Random Facts:

I love Marvel & DC Comic Super Heroes! I think we all have our own unique superpowers. I know you are probably wondering, what would be my superpower? I think I would choose Professor Xavier from X-Men to be the strongest Telepath in the World.

My next favorite character would be Wonder Woman. I love her strength and abilities. I also think having the Lasso of Truth would benefit me in my current work in healing people.

Lastly, I LOVE BLACK PANTHER!! #WAKANDAFOREVER

I LOVE tea and ABSOLUTELY hate taste of coffee.

I love to travel and hang with my girlfriends!

In my next life I will probably be a Stand Up Comedian because I love to make people laugh.

Favorite Foods: I’m of Mexican and Chamorru (Pacific Islander) decent so of course I love Mexican & Chamorro food, but Italian food & sushi I loveee too! Lasgana is my favorite dish and Poké bowls are always my go-to during lunch time.

Favorite Books: There are a couple of books that have heavily influenced me throughout my life, which are: A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Micheal Dorris, which share the story of three generations of Native American women and their relationship with the world as well as each other. The second book is Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, who is known as one of the founders of contemporary Chicano literature. Bless Me, Ultima is a story of a little boy named Antonio and his life as he is heavily influenced by his “protector” Ultima, a curendera (healer), who is seen as a bruja (witch) to others. I love these books because they share the lives and stories of communities of color and aid in increasing this representation within literature.

Favorite Music: I listen to a mixture of a lot of music! Whenever I’m in the mood to relax I listen to classical music like Vivaldi or R&B/Soul. I love Harry Styles, so I play his albums whenever I’m feeling happy or emotional. Ms. Lauryn Hill is always a go-to, and my absolute favorite old-school hip-hop group is Digable Planets. Sade is another amazing musician that I love! Island music/Reggae is also a go-to, that always plays in my house. Along with Vincente Fernandez and Ramon Ayala. To me music is a way we can connect with people from all over the world and realize despite there being a language barriers or cultural gaps, with music we can connect with each other. Some artists I have to list are, Lizzo, Selena, H. E. R., Ari Lennox, Fiji, J Boog, David Bowie, The Fugees and Mighty Diamonds.

Favorite Movie: I absolutely LOVE films, I love being able to watch a movie and instantly be engulfed in a whole new world, whether it makes me laugh, cry or get scared, to me regardless of which emotion a film relays it’s still a beautiful experience. I can’t share specifically what my ultimately number 1 fav movie is so i’ll share a few!! First off, the beautifully and powerfully written Princess Mononoke Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, is probably the best movie ever, that share the struggle between humans, gods, demons and the forest. Showing the relationships amongst each other as they attempt to coexist. Another great classic is, The Godfather Directed by Francis Ford Coppola: About the Corleone family and the creation of the Corleone empire of respect, loyalty and crime. My favorite quotes from this movie are, “Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgement” and “Don’t ever take sides with anyone against the family again”. Lastly some movies I have to mention as classics are, Boulevard Nights Directed by Michael Pressman, The Neverending Story Directed by Wolfgang Peterson and Freedom Writers Richard LaGravenese.

Favorite Ways to Destress: My favorite ways to destress include, watching a movie or reading a book. However, listening to music and doing some self-care is good when you only have a few moments to yourself. Self-care can be anything, it can be facemasks, treating your-self out, going for a walk or reflecting on your day. I’ve found it helpful when I get in touch with how I feel emotionally and physically. By checking in on myself it allows me to pause, destress and become aware of why I’m stressed.

Random Facts: Some random facts about me include: I love Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker, Ben Solo/Kylo Ren & C3PO are my favorite characters. I love The Mandalorian as well (and baby yoda). I love DC & Marvel, I’ve seen every marvel movie and my favorite Marvel characters are Loki, Spider-man, Iron-Man and Baby Groot. My favorite DC characters are Joker, Batman, Wonder Women & Teen Titans. I was a huge One Direction fan growing up so I love Harry Styles (guilty pleasure). I love making videos and have experience in video production, my hobby is to create short films and do photoshoots. I love anime, my favorite animes are InuYasha, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Soul Eater and Noragami. Fun fact, I seen the incredible amazing legendary Prince in concert when I was 10 or 12 years old. I’ve dye’d my hair 10 different colors throughout my life. I love Disneyland. I love Rollercoasters. I also love attending marches and feel like there’s power in numbers and everyone has a voice, we just need to find the courage to use it. Last year I attended the Climate Strike in LA and ever since then, I’ve been inspired to use my voice in representing my community and showing up in support of other communities.
